According to the Hawaiian Dictionary by Pukui and Elbert, the word “moʻolelo” comes from the word “moʻo ʻōlelo” which means succession of talk. Traditionally, all stories were oral, not written.
In the Open Forum Moʻolelo O Molokai, Kumu Paʻa Nui Lawrence Kalainia Kamani Aki, shares with us the stories and history that come from the Island of Molokai.
Often, these stories tell us about the history and significance of a place, such as place names, type of vegetation, springs, cultural practices, or the endeavors of people in the history of Molokai.
Many stories have a deeper message and teach us about how to behave morally upright within a Kanaka Maoli a.k.a. Hawaiian worldview.
Join us for masterful storytelling by Kumu Lawrence, who knows many stories as shared by his elders in Halawa Valley, his blood-uncle Kumu Hula ʻAnakala Pilipo Solatorio, and others, such as ʻAnakē Harriet Ne, and Kumu Hula John Kaimikaua.
